New Fiscal Year Brings No Relief From Unprecedented State Budget ProblemsBy Elizabeth C. McNichol and Iris Lav
At least 48 states have addressed or still face shortfalls in their budgets for fiscal year 2010 totaling $165 billion – or almost one-quarter of state budgets.
This includes new shortfalls of $26 billion that have opened up in the adopted 2010 budgets of at least 13 states and the District of Columbia, just one month into the new fiscal year.
